On Birth Photography, films, and the Moments You Don’t See

There are parts of birth you won’t remember clearly.
Not because they weren’t important, but because labor asks you to turn inward. Time blurs. Sounds soften. Your world becomes smaller and more focused.
I’ve learned, over time, that those are often the moments families are most grateful to see once the blur of postpartum has lifted. They are healing, encouraging and empowering.
As a birth photographer, I’m watching the room as a whole while you’re doing the hardest work of your life. The way your partner stays close. The way a nurse or Midwife quietly adjusts the lights. The expression on your face right before everything shifts.
This is what documentary birth photography holds space for. Not the highlight reel, but the truth of it. The strength and the tenderness. The effort and the relief. The way a room feels when a baby finally arrives.
No two births are ever the same. And that’s what keeps me deeply invested in this work. Each story unfolds in its own way, at its own pace. My role is simply to witness it with care and respect.
